Moon River
A heavy German accent and a stiff on-camera persona, Lawrence Welk was an unlikely television star of the 1950s. Yet the one thing he had in abundance and which enabled him to carve out a lengthy and successful career was a knowledge of what his audiences liked and how to feed them. Whilst the musical interludes on his show were often described as musical candy floss, they were appealing on camera and sold well on record. Indeed, Lawrence was at the forefront of the easy listening market, offering interpretations of the hits of the day in a style that was unique.
