Pergolesi: Stabat Mater, Salve Regina
The Stabat mater is a thirteenth-century Roman Catholic hymn variously attributed to Pope Innocent III and Friar Jacopone da Todi. Its title is an abbreviation of the first line of verse, Stabat mater dolorosa ( The sorrowful mother stood ). One of the most powerful and immediate of extant medieval poems, the Stabat mater meditates on the suffering of Mary during Jesus crucifixion and is traditionally sung at the liturgy on the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. Pergolesi s musical setting is one of the most beloved works in all of classical music. This new recording from the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin features vocal solos by alto Bernarda Fink and soprano Anna Prohaska.
