Since its formation in 1969 Juan Formel and his band Los Van Van (Spanish for "The Go Gos") have been one of the world's premier Latin American dance orchestras. They are masters of the songo rhythm, which they invented, and have continually developed their unique sound fusing charanga, son, jazz and their own songo and timba styles. Unafraid to experiment, they've added trombones, synthesizers and drum machines to their rhythm-and-violins charanga sound, and they occasionally use rock chord progressions and bass lines to dramatic effect. Juan Formel, at 63 years old, still remains on the cutting edge of Latin American music after more than three decades of performing on the scene.
