1 3/4 inch (44mm) Round
Bronze Antique
USS Kitty Hawk Launched on May 21, 1960, the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) is one of the most enduring ships in U.S. Navy history. The second U.S. Navy ship named in honor of the birthplace of powered flight, the USS Kitty Hawk is a massive supercarrier, stretching 1,047 feet in length and supporting a full compliment of 85 combat aircraft and more than 4,500 officers and crew. Capable of cutting through the water at 35 knots, the Kitty Hawk has a displacement of 60,000 tons. Supporting the Navy's Carrier Air Wing Five, the Kitty Hawk has completed more than a dozen deployments and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its role in supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001. It is currently based in Yokusuka, Japan.  This coin honors the proud legacy of the USS Kitty Hawk and salutes the service of her dedicated crew. The obverse contains a detailed rendering of the ship with picturesque Mount Fuji looming in the background. The reverse depicts the famous bi-plane that soared over the bluffs of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903 with the legendary Wright Brothers' flight.  Minted in deep relief using a special "splash minting" process, this coin is struck in a brass alloy and finished in antique bronze. Each coin comes packaged with a detailed header card that describes the USS Kitty Hawk's contribution to America's national security.
