Bronze Antique
USS Nimitz  Launched on May 13, 1972, the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) serves as the lead ship of the U.S. Navy's newest and largest class of aircraft carriers.  Named in honor of the legendary Navy Fleet Admiral, Chester W. Nimitz, this massive ship measures more than 18 stories high from keel to masthead and has a total length of 1,092 feet. Carrying a full compliment of 5,800 officers and crew and 85 combat aircraft, its enormous 4.5 acre flight deck serves as the launching pad for the supersonic jets of Carrier Air Wing 11. A vital component of America's military arsenal, the USS Nimitz recently provided critical support to aid Operation Iraqi Freedom, launching more than 6,500 air combat missions from her decks.  This coin salutes the outstanding dedication and steady commitment of all those who serve aboard the USS Nimitz. The obverse features a rendering of Admiral Nimitz depicted above the ship named in his honor. The reverse bears the ship's distinctive five-star emblem.  Minted in MerlinGold,® a proprietary brass alloy that simulates the look and feel of gold, this coin is finished in antique bronze. Containing vivid and extraordinary detail, it is struck using special "splash" dies that allow the coin's design to be set in deep relief. Each piece comes packaged with a header card that describes the USS Nimitz in full detail. If you are considering this as a gift, why not make it complete with our greeting card featuring this coin. The card comes packaged with a self-mailer featuring framing quality artwork.
