The first animals sent into space were fruit flies in 1947. The first cat to be launched into space was Felicette, from France. The original launch cat was called Felix, and was due to be fired off in 1963, but he escaped – lucky him! The oldest person to fly into space was John Glenn, who was an incredible seventy-seven when he boarded the STS-95 space shuttle in 1998. The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest spacecraft currently in orbit and is roughly the size of a football field. In 2012, the Voyager-1 spacecraft became the first manmade object to leave the Solar System.
