Wedges and shims are a very effective way to split stone, whether you need a precise cut, or are simply reducing the size of a boulder to make it more manageable. Place no more than 4" apart in the stone - closer for hard to split or precision work. Make sure the "ears" are facing in the direction you want your stone to split. Strike firmly but without force up and down the line. Wait a few minutes and do it again. It is pressure, not force, that will split your stone. To remove drill holes, follow with Trow & Holden Mason's Chipper. Always wear safety glasses.
