- The 4WD axle actuator housing, also called axle disconnect housing, is part of differential that houses the gears and shift fork required to lock both front axles together. It works together with transfer case to send torque to all four wheels. Most of the time, the vehicle is in RWD.When 4WD is engaged, transfer case engages the front driveshaft.
