A Life Of Her Own

Netty Small is one of four siblings of dysfunctional parents forced together into unsuitable matrimony by the moral constraints of the early 60s, who discover, too late, that their union is toxic.

Growing up in the industrial town of Huddersfield in northern England in the mid-seventies, Netty gradually realises that her home life is not like those of her school friends.

Netty uncomplainingly takes on the most demeaning of household tasks, whilst she and her brothers live in constant fear of their unpredictable mother, who appears to have attempted to take her own life.

With a mentally fragile mother, Netty is buoyed up by her faith in her dad and his hoped-for revolution.

Harry Small is a dreamer, a jack of all trades and indulges himself in â€˜get rich quickâ€™ schemes.

He inscribes in his children a sense of determination and a work ethic which ensures that they will be successful in the future, despite their humble origins.

But as Netty moves from childhood into her teens, changes in her family dynamics, both emotional and physical, trouble her immensely.

As her family as knew it is annihilated and with the presence of her fatherâ€™s new woman, Julie, Netty takes her first tentative steps into the grown-up world.

What Netty learns along the way will prepare her for a life and family of her own, and will create for her a foundation upon which to build her future...

This is a story of survival and strength; a coming of coming of age story in which an impoverished girl experiences a rude awakening into life.
