Aduna reflects the depth and diversity of this top-ranking West African artist. Alpha Yaya Diallo, originally from Guinea, now makes his home in Vancouver, Canada, and is known as a remarkable guitarist adept with both acoustic and electric instruments. His rootsy setting of "Yeke Yeke" and his playing on "Dewe" and "Nene" display his scintillating acoustic style. He conjures the sound of the kora (the traditional West African harp) from his guitar and plays flowing improvisational runs of exceptional tonal purity. In addition to the masterful guitar work, this CD contains fine ensemble performances from Diallo and his band, powerful vocals, and terrific percussion. The liner notes include translations of the lyrics, which reveal positive messages of unity and an optimistic view of the future. --Jeff Grubb
