The Amazon Echo is probably the closest we can get to Iron Man’s artificial intelligence robot called J.A.R.V.I.S as of this time—the obedient and trustworthy companion of Mr. Tony Stark. The Amazon Echo device is not as big as J.A.R.V.I.S and it cannot sweep the floor or extinguish fire.
However, it is equipped with similar features in which it can obey your commands and give you information anytime you need it. In the Iron Man series, Tony Stark only has to ask J.A.R.V.I.S for information and the program does just that. The Amazon Echo is capable of doing the same.
Called Alexa, the Amazon Echo was dubbed as Project D (for Doppler) during its development to keep it discreet. It took at least four years to develop the Echo. The scientists worked hard to give us this technology so they had to work in silence and keep it a top secret to prevent others from working on the same type of device. This is the second revolutionary product Amazon has introduced to the public since Amazon Kindle, the grandfather of all tablets—and maybe we can expect more. In fact, it seems that this is only the beginning of what technologies Amazon can bring to the public.
Amazon Echo is a voice recognition device that allows you to perform tasks such as playing your favorite music, organizing your shopping list, and do research for you—all at the command of your voice. It is not a robot but it technically belongs to the Home Virtual Assistant Appliance Category.
As such, it is a software program that works like Apple’s SIRI. There are no known conceptual differences among Amazon’s Echo, Apple’s SIRI, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Google Now. All these programs are built to provide the same function but the Amazon Echo can be programmed to run all your electronic systems in your house, provided that they are compatible. The other three voice-recognition programs cannot do that.
People say that the Amazon Echo is a surplus technology because we already carry the same application on our phones. However, the Amazon Echo is the future of virtual assistants because it is optimized for hands-free use. Though it comes with an app, it primarily works out of your voice. The app only serves as an installation or syncing program to ensure that all your accounts are appropriately connected.
The Amazon Echo is capable of looking for answers in the Internet and is also capable of playing music at your command. You can tell the device to search for weather updates or for facts form Wikipedia. What sets Alexa apart is her—yes, we will refer to the device as she—ability to recognize your voice from other people. In a crowd where there is too much chatter, Alexa can isolate your voice and respond to you as she hears you and this is made possible by the voice training program which will be discussed in the book.
