The title of this book, Begill Hiywete Kederresewinna Kaggattemegn ANDAFTA LAWGACHIHU, can be translated as “LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU FOR A MOMENT with Some of What Occurred in My Private Life.†The book, written in Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia, is an autobiography by Professor Getatchew Haile. Getatchew was born in Tute, a tiny village in Shenkora, Ethiopia, on June 1, 1932 (Ginbot 24, 1924 Ethiopian Calendar). In 1936, when the Italians occupied Ethiopia, Getatchew’s family was divided and displaced, and he moved around a great deal. Following liberation in 1941, he began his formal education at traditional religious schools. As a young adult, he studied Theology at the Coptic Theological College in Cairo, Egypt, and Semitic Philology at the University of Tübingen, Germany. Upon completion of his studies, he taught Amharic, Ge’ez and Arabic at the Haile Sellasie I (now Addis Ababa) University from 1962 to 1974. Getatchew and his family fled Ethiopia and ultimately moved to the United States in 1976 as political refugees after coming into conflict with the Derg, the military junta which ruled the country from 1974 to 1991. Since his arrival in the United States, Professor Getatchew Haile has been affiliated with Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, as cataloguer of Ethiopian manuscripts (on microfilm), deposited at the University’s Hill Museum & Manuscript Library. True to the book’s title, the content is narrated in the traditional style of the African story teller, with the aim of entertaining the reader.
