When the wizard's watching for fractures between worlds sense a familiar return of magic in the nearby mountains, a large show of force is sent. After an attack from creatures from another world the previous summer, Southwall can't be too careful. Even so research wizards join with the army and find lingering sources of power hidden within the mountains.
As someone who had fought the alien force, Sebastian's sister, Katya, along with her mentor Ylena go along both as a training mission and to use their powers of diplomacy to help hold the different factions of Southwall's army together peacefully. Though it appears to be a simple enough mission as the army rediscovers an old battle site, new wrinkles occur as they try to find the source of the magic lingering in their world. Hidden and potentially a trap, the wizards of Southwall do their best to uncover this strange power while avoiding potential danger. Unfortunately, not every soldier can be taught such restraint and they find out what it means to trigger a trap made out of time.
Clouds of black and white dust appear killing all in their way and only a quick use of magic saves them and possibly much of Southwall were it to escape. After complete disaster is avoided, Sebastian is called on to find out what happened to the army sent when a powerful blast of power can be felt from the mountains. Worried about what such a powerful spike could be, the mage goes off in search of his sister and the forces sent with her.
Seeing the trap as a warning, Southwall prepares to defend their country and perhaps the world from a threat beyond the borders of Alus. As more portals begin to appear, Sebastian and his team scramble to track other sources of this new magic before this enemy can release the deadly magic to destroy their world.
