This is a print of a painting from 1869 depicting the Birkebeiners escorting the young Prince Haakon, a heir to the Norwegian throne, to safety from Osterdalen to Trondheim, a long and perilous journey through treacherous mountains and forests in 1206. The Birkebeiners, or birchlegs, were Norwegian Viking Warriors that were called this due to the footwear of animal skins, wrapped around the legs and secured with birch roots that they wore.
