EXCERPT:

As Patricia made her way out of the parking lot, completely humiliated by her first attempt at sleuthing, she heard heavy footsteps behind her. Telling herself it was simply another employee getting off of work, she kept on course for the back door of the club and refrained from grabbing a weapon. She refused to go through that episode again.

The footsteps abruptly came up closer and before she could think to panic, someone grabbed her from behind, wrenching one of her arms up her back then putting another hand, a big, smelly hand over her mouth. She tried to scream, but of course, the smelly hand held back any escaping sounds. Within moments she was whisked to the dirt field, and away from any light. Her thoughts immediately went to her brand new Kate Spade pumps, and how they were getting all scratched up in the dirt. She did her best not to let that happen, but her abductor kept pulling her backwards and she kept losing her footing.

â€œIf you know whatâ€™s good for you, youâ€™ll stop snooping around, and asking questions,â€ the male voice mumbled, his breath hot in her ear. â€œDo you understand me?â€

He pulled her arm up tighter causing a sharp pain to scream across her shoulder.

She nodded or at least attempted to nod, but he was holding on so tight she could barely breathe let alone nod. Her focus went to the pungent smell of his hands: potato chips, she was sure. Sour cream and chives, potato chips.

Her attacker had dug around in a bag of chips before he accosted her? Who did that?

â€œGood, I might let you go without doing too much damage this time. But next time, I wonâ€™t be in such a generous mood. I can get rid of you in such a ways that no one will suspect a thing. Make it look like you did it to yourself. Do we understand each other?â€

She attempted another nod.

She didn't know what he meant by â€˜too much damageâ€™ and had no intention of finding out.

With her free hand, she managed to fish around in her purse and grab the rat-tail comb. In one sharp movement, she ripped the comb out of her purse and thrust it with all her might into his groin.

â€œYeow!â€ her captor yelled, instantly letting go.

Patricia made a beeline for the road, and the back door of the restaurant. No way did she want to stick around to get a look at his face. Not with a rat-tail comb stuck in his privates. In her haste, she dropped her purse, but kept moving forward, not caring about retrieving it, no matter if it did match her shoes and would be impossible to replace.

Style had to be sacrificed for personal safety.
