From the Introduction: In early May a twitter campaign called #saveourgirls captured the attention of the American public by shedding light on the April 14th kidnappings of over 200 school girls by the terrorist group Boko Haram. Over the coming months Boko Haram, an Islamic militant group in Northern Nigeria, received a surge of international attention similar to that of Lord’s Resistance Army after the #kony2012 twitter campaign. For many who wanted to learn more about the insurgency in Nigeria, and the subsequent kidnappings, the media oftentimes failed to provide the level of detailed analysis on the situation, and were guilty of sensationalizing aspects of the conflict.
With some sectors of America demanding greater involvement in Nigeria, it’s important that the public is properly informed about the conflict, so they can assess whether this is really the right course of action. To provide the reader with a greater understanding of Boko Haram we have broken this book into five chapters each covering a different aspect of this group.
We start off with The Origins and Methods of Boko Haram where Allen Chatt walks through the history and current standing of the group. Next Analysis of the Nigerian Military's COIN Operations by Ryan Milliken shows how the Nigerian military is failing in their counter insurgency mission. We then look at Boko Haram: Transnational Links by Joe Soriero, which explores the transnational connections of Boko Haram and assesses whether or not it’s fair to classify them as a transnational terrorist group. After that Brendan McNamara’s Boko Haram’s Use of Mass Kidnapping examines the Chibok kidnappings and identifies what this incident tells us about Boko Haram’s current state. Finally Evan Procknow’s chapter Zero Dark Never: The Pitfalls of Direct Intervention in Nigeria explores what policy options the US should consider employing against Boko Haram.
We realize that due to the rapidly evolving situation on the ground, parts of this book will inevitably be out paced by current events. Regardless, a lot of the information conveyed in this book is important for understanding the overall Nigeria situation, and we hope that it gives the reader a fuller understanding of Boko Haram and allows them to reexamine their perceptions about the situation in West Africa. This book has been exciting to work on, and we want to thank everyone who has helped us in this process. - Brendan McNamara
