Bach's time at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin, these sonatas provided the court's viola da gamba player with ample opportunities to display both virtuosity and sensitivity. The instrument was going out of fashion when the forward-looking C.P.E. Bach composed these works, but they represent some of the finest and most expressive music in the repertoire. German viola da gamba player Johanna Rose lives in Seville, Spain. She is a member of the group Accademia del Piacere and has played with numerous ensembles like La Venexiana, La Grande Chapelle and La Orchesta Barroca.
