The seasoned jazz soloists collectively known as The Cookers derive their name from Night of the Cookers the recorded trumpet summit between Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard staged at Brooklyn s Club La Marchal in 1965. The Cookers are a veteran supergroup consisting of George Cables on piano, Billy Harper on tenor saxophone, Billy Hart on drums, Cecil McBee on bass, Eddie Henderson and David Weiss on trumpet and flugelhorn and Craig Handy on flute and alto saxophone. On Cast the First Stone, The Cookers got together with an idea of the sonic approach they wanted to pursue and reached back into their catalogs for vibrant pieces. The resulting album is a unique experience, full of inspiration, moxie and brilliance.
