Christmas in Germany is a very special time. Traditions are important to us all but it is maybe in Germany – more than any other country – that the Christmas Traditions hold such an important position. These traditions – the special Christmas foods, drinks, and customs – are not “preserved†in Germany as a tourist attraction or as an antique diversion, but are a central part of the celebrations of the birth, in a manger, of the child who later started one of the greatest religious movements on our planet. In this book the well-known author Barbara Rias-Bucher delves into all aspects of Christmas. She tells us not only how to cook seasonal favourites but also explains their significance. She tells us where Saint Nicholas was born, and how his story is linked to the golden baubles on our Christmas Trees. She tells us not only where the best Christmas Markets are in Germany, but gives us their history and the stories behind the traditional goods sold their. A kiss under the mistletoe at Christmas is always good – however maybe even better if you know what it originally meant. Barbara Rias-Bucher clearly has a vast knowledge on this subject – however she also has the “light touch†which one would expect from someone famous for her cookery books. This book is never stodgy, and is a fascinating read. With Michael E. Morris as the translator Frau Rias-Bucher has obviously found an Englishman with a passion for both cooking and for German traditions.
