I had just finished running a 5K race when my phone rang. It was the Warden, the Senior Warden, calling me on a Saturday, typically not a good thing, but the first thing he said was, “I hope you’re restedâ€. I had to laugh, oh well, at least I hadn’t just run a full marathon. He told me what the deal was and that my presence was requested at the unit. I had some loose ends to tie up, I had to go pack a bag and grab some clothes and gear, but I was at the unit in a couple of hours.
Being a Field Boss for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice means having to be flexible when it comes to doing "other duties as assigned". Working in a prison isn't at all like you see on TV and the people that do the countless jobs, that have to get done, are usually one a few that will get work horsed until the system is through with them.
