Cristo's Chronicles - Book Two - The King's Spies
Fresh off significant adventures and high achievement, Cristo, Grigor and their mentor Lord Allard are looking forward to quietly continuing their studies of the seasons. The boys are basking in the glory of being named 'Squires of the Realm' and receiving King's pendants for their part in the development of a bead calendar and the shadow clock. Lord Allard has extended the use of symbols to develop a counting system. Cristo makes his contribution in the from of a primitive bead abacus. The Queen is pregnant and The King is happy. Peace and prosperity reign in Adolphia. Duke Nextor frustrated by the success that The King had with the new calendar is plotting insurrection. He attacks Hedgewick's castle, but is unsuccessful in taking it and is maintaining a siege. King Adolphus is furious when he hears of this rebellion. He summons his advisers to plan his response. Lord Allard informs him of the new counting system and tells him that a spy could easily count Nextor's soldiers and The King would know how large a force he would need to defeat Nextor. Unfortunately, the only people capable of doing this deed are Cristo and Grigor. They are dispatched along with a guard to Nextor's encampment. They count the troops and are heading back when they are attacked. Cristo is captured, but Grigor escapes with his copy of the troop count. He is distraught over abandoning Cristo, but carried out his duty to get the information back to Lord Allard. The ensuing battle reveals the value of the counting system and the courage of Cristo and Grigor are pivotal to the outcome.
