Cristo's Chronicles Book Three The King's Emissaries: Book Three The King's Emissaries
Cristo has recovered from his imprisonment, but now nightmares of the evil, black eyes of Boltair haunt his dreams. The island of Adolphia is at an uneasy peace as tension builds between King Adolphus and Nextor over the large military force on the border of Nextor Land. Meanwhile Cristo and Grigor are teaching the new number system to all who come to Adolphus. The Queen is pregnant and everyone awaits the birth of the royal child. Cristo is doubly excited because the longest day of the year is approaching which completes a full cycle since they started to measure the days and develop the calendar. In Nextor Land, Lord Soltan has been unsuccessful in convincing Nextor to resolve the conflict at the High Pass and make peace with King Adolphus. Nextor makes a gesture of peace by asking Soltan to travel to Adolphus to request that Grigor, a native son of Nextor Land, return home so that he may be honored for his part in developing the calendar and the number system. Cristo is asked to accompany him to teach the numbers to Nextor and his court. To make sure that Grigor and Cristo are safe, Lord Allard and Cristo use their new knowledge of symbols to develop a written language. Cristo sends daily secret messages back to Adolphus reporting his true situation. The boys enjoy the first few days of teaching Nextor and his people and Cristo reports that all is well with the written messages. He also becomes smitten with a young maiden, Rosemede, who is Lord Soltan's daughter. Unbeknownst to King Adolphus, the peacemaking gesture is a ruse to hide Nextor's plan to secretly attack Adolphus. With the aide of Lord Soltan, Cristo learns of Nextor's plan and informs King Adolphus through their secret written messages. The exciting conclusion involves a pitched battle between King Adolphus' and Nextor's armies in which the secret message system turns the tide for King Adolphus. Cristo and Grigor endure a watery escape and return to the peace and safety of Adolphia. The story concludes with the birth of a royal Prince on the longest day of the year. King Adolphus declares the birth to be a hallmark to be celebrated yearly with the new calendar created by Cristo and Lord Allard.
