Purpose: To help students master the basic principles of Spanish grammar, acquire practical skill in the spoken language, and gain some understanding of Hispanic culture. This new edition, while retaining many of the features that made the first edition successful, strengthens and modernizes the pedagogy. 47 chapters are divided into 9 parts with Review Exercises after Parts 2 to 6. The material contains a variety of exercises adapted to all levels of ability. Newer features of this edition include exercises with pictures which provide visual association of the topics being studied-real-life situations reflecting students' own experiences. Each chapter subject is divided into its smallest topical units, reinforced by one or more Practice Exercises. Numerous cultural pieces, many accompanied by new photographs, depict various aspects of the Hispanic world. Updated vocabulary includes words like computadora, disco compacto, tienda de informatica, etc. Many sentences in the exercises have been modified to show the cultural diversity in the world today. Several selections in the Reading Practice section have been substituted in this edition by more interesting and relevant passages. An additional unit, the Imperfect Tense, has been added in simplified form to the section on Optional Chapters. The first two chapters dealing with the Spanish-speaking world have been updated. The original format of the text has been retained. Chapters are not arranged in a cumulative sequence. Mastery of a topic does not require mastery of previous topics. Teachers have the option of assigning chapters in any order. End material consists of Verb Chart and English-Spanish, Spanish-English Vocabularies.
