DIY SMALL BOAT BUILDING - With Clinker Plywood Designs
This book is based on 30 years of experience building and designing boats using various methods of boat building. This method – Clinker Plywood – produces more traditional looking craft relatively quickly, cheaply and easily. There are many designs for this method of building out there to choose from, including my own. This manual gives general information which can be used to help build a boat designed for this method taking you through the process in a logical sequence. This way of building suits boats of a wide range of types and sizes – dinghies, sailing boats, motor boats, canoes etc. It suits more traditional designs and although not the simplest way to build a boat it is still great for the DIY builder. The build process involves marking out the planks and other parts on sheets of plywood, cutting them out and building a simple frame of beams and moulds which the planks and other structural parts are placed over. They are held in place with stitches, nails or screws and then the lap joint is epoxied. This produces a rigid hull ready for fitting out and painting then, its ready for launching. This is a very enjoyable way to get a boat. It is also very rewarding when you see the results of your work on the water. All you need is a little DIY ability, a set of plans, a few sheets of plywood and some epoxy materials. A small dinghy can be built for as little as £150 using cheap plywood.
