The American Psychiatric Associationâ€™s publication, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, has been the industry standard for clinicians, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and policymakers since the original draft was published in 1952. The fifth revision of the Manual, informally known as DSM-5, was published in May 2013. While the Manual has been a valuable tool for decades, it is not without controversy. Ongoing concerns about the reliability and validity of the diagnostic categories exist across the industry, and these concerns have prompted the National Institute of Mental Health to develop an alternate framework for diagnosis and treatment.
