Deadly Crossing: A Gripping Suspense Thriller (The Tom Dugan Thrillers)
Note: Each Dugan book is a standalone story. Read them in any order.
Human Trafficking. Modern day slavery. A crime all around us, hidden in plain sight. The story is fiction. The tragedy is all too real. A tale of triumph and retribution.
A phone call. A common event, sometimes welcome, sometimes annoying, but seldom life changing. Or so we assume. But assumptions are dangerous, and the reality is we all live one phone call away from disaster. One muted buzz from learning a lifetime of memories has disappeared in a raging house fire. One cheerful ring from news of a tragic accident.
Or worse.
And so it is for Dugan, rolling through the London night, the woman he loves in the taxi beside him. Life is good by any measure — until his phone rings, alerting him to the arrival of two old Russian friends with a very big problem.
Dugan’s attempts to help his friends rescue an innocent girl from the Russian mafia plunge him into a world he’d scarcely imagined, endangering him and everyone he holds dear. A world of unspeakable cruelty, from which no one will escape, unless Dugan can weather a Deadly Crossing.
A Note from the Author
Like most authors, I hope to inform as well as entertain, and to vicariously place my readers in situations where they might not otherwise imagine themselves. So my stories are fictional, but based on real (or at least plausible) events.
That wasn’t difficult in the past; as my previous work was set in the shipping industry I know well and in familiar locales. However, human trafficking was a subject far outside my ‘comfort zone,’ and it required a great deal of research. What I found wasn’t pleasant.
Events in Deadly Crossing are fictional, but the cruelty of human trafficking and the methods depicted to control victims are all too real. And while Russia and former Soviet Bloc countries provide the victims for this story, human trafficking exists everywhere, including North America and Western Europe. Wherever you are, there are hidden victims of this horrible crime within a few hours (or few minutes) drive.
So I hope you enjoy Deadly Crossing, but I also hope it leaves you with a heightened awareness of the prevalence of this horrible crime, and a resolve to support efforts to eradicate it.
Warning: While this book is suitable for a young adult audience, parental discretion is advised for persons younger than 15 years, due to the mature subject matter.
Excerpts From Amazon Reviews (See Full Text Below)
An incredible look into the evils of human trafficking and the utter contempt for life, the corruption necessary for it to succeed, and the ruthlessness of the Russian mafia. Page turning action, plenty of twists and turns, and more fact than fiction. A fantastic read and well worth the time. - Sam B. Wagner
A fast moving action story with special agents, Russian Mafia and human trafficking. While the details are gritty and realistic, it was a moving story that was well written. You won't be disappointed. – Patricia Jacobs
A well-developed and well-delivered story. I know little of the Russian Mafia or human trafficking, but McDermott writes as if he is fluent in these areas, allowing me to concentrate on the story at hand. I look forward to whatever he is working on next. – Troy Man
A well-written, intense story. It has kidnapping, human trafficking, and Russian mafia elements. Very gripping story well worth your time. - Jeff Rolsten
McDermott explores his subject in depth and writes a convincing if at times terrifying tale that’s not for the squeamish. He reveals the seamy side of the Russian mafia, as well as the corruption of local authorities that allow the mob to operate with near impunity in the areas of international narcotics, human trafficking, and control through terror. A taut, well-written, tale. – Joseph Harris
