Bandleader/trumpeter Steven Bernstein has put in time with quasi-bohemian ensembles like the Lounge Lizards and Spanish Fly. On his Sex Mob's debut, Bernstein chooses irreverent covers of songs like "Goldfinger," "House of the Rising Sun," and even the "Macarena." While there are some avant- garde sounds included here, much of Din Of Inequity is in the tradition of classic jazz and showcases the chops of Bernstein (on slide trumpet) and his tag-team partner, altoist Briggan Krauss. Anchored by the rhythm section of Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums), Bernstein and Krauss stomp and wail all over these compositions. Not only that, Bernstein also revives the works of Duke Ellington and Prince. Guests include keyboardist John Medeski and guitarist Adam Levy. A very well-rounded jazz recording. --Mitch Myers
