Dog head hammer 3 lb | | Japanese blacksmith hammer | Knife making
This blacksmith hammer design is excellent for all kinds of projects, but is especially good for knife making. The way the head is balanced allows the blacksmith to let gravity do more of the work and to make very even, uniform hammer blows. At 3 pounds it moves metal noticeably better than lighter hammers, but is not so heavy that it wears out your arm. It's ideal for forging knives and even swords. On the side it has laser etched the Japanese kanji for "swordsmith" (katana kaji). It is made of heat-treated 1045 plain carbon steel. All blacksmiths modify the striking faces of their hammers by rounding them a bit with a grinder or power sander of some sort. The face of this hammer has been rounded a bit for you, so it shouldn't take more than a minute or two (literally) to finish rounding it to your preferences.
