EIGHT LIES (About the Truth): A collection of short stories
From the bestselling author of THE TRINITY GAME, TRIGGER CITY, and BIG CITY BAD BLOOD, comes this collection of crime stories, including winners of Anthony Award for Best Short Story and CWA Short Story Dagger Award, and nominees for the Edgar, Macavity, and Dagger, as well as two previously unpublished stories, exclusive to this collection.
EIGHT LIES (ABOUT THE TRUTH) also contains introductions to each story by the author and a sample of his bestselling new novel, THE TRINITY GAME.
The stories…
A SLEEP NOT UNLIKE DEATH – When his mercenary past comes calling, Gravedigger Peace must face the violent man he once was – but can he do it without becoming that man again?
MAYBE SOMEDAY – For one lonely man, a brief affair with a married woman leads to a life of obsession and regret. Is it merely foolish to believe in love at first sight, or is it fatal?
THE NON COMPOS MENTIS BLUES – Chicago PI Ray Dudgeon paves the road to hell with his good intentions in this story of adultery, divorce, and murder.
BREAD AND CIRCUSES – Delwood Crawley is a bottom-feeding scumbag, but Ray Dudgeon still owes him a favor. Ray makes good (and bad) on the debt he incurred in the novel BIG CITY BAD BLOOD.
ONE SERVING OF BAD LUCK – To get justice for a paraplegic librarian, Ray Dudgeon must navigate through some desperate lives and face off against the hired thugs of big business. Sometimes money is all the justice you can hope for.
BUT NOT EVERYTHING – She needs to know the dark secrets of his past. He’s afraid his past will drive her away. Sucks to be both of them. This “flash†story clocks in at fewer than 300 words, but each one packs a punch.
A CALCULATED RISK – A former covert operative for Uncle Sam, Tom Bailey now runs a fishing charter in the Bahamas as a cover for his more lucrative people-smuggling service. His new client wants to be smuggled into Haiti and back out again. This gig could pave the way for Tom to go legit, if it doesn’t get him killed.
THE HARRISON HOTEL – When I first lived in Chicago in the late ’80s, the South Loop was still struggling to gentrify. When I returned in 2006, everything had changed. This “memory piece†is a nod to the old neighborhood and the old ex-cons who once lived there.
