Enchiridion HACKED - The Modern Man's Guide to Epictetus' Classic Philosophy
In November 1965, James Stockdale, an American fighting in the Vietnam War, was captured when his Skyhawk aircraft was shot down. He managed to eject himself and parachute into a village, before being beaten and taken away. Faced with an indefinite stint in a Vietnamese prison, he was faced with two choices; he could either go mad with fury, frustration and sorrow, reneging against his captors, losing his will and his mind amidst the total darkness of solitary confinement; or he could accept his situation with an indefatigable, unbending moral code that said to his captors, "You are not going to get the better of me. You are not going to break me."
This is the essence of Stoicism. The Enchiridion, now over two-thousand years old, is a text that challenges us to accept external things as they are, and to use our rational, objective mind to better ourselves and our situation. It teaches us that there are actions committed by others, and actions committed by ourselves. We should accept the actions of others with calmness and without complaint, whilst mastering our own with the right attitude; self-mastery, self-discipline and resolve.
