It is estimated that just over 85,000 new cases of Syphilis are reported to the CDC each year and the total number of infected individuals has been increasing over the past few years. Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is spread from sexual contact (including vaginal, anal, and oral sex) with someone who is infected. This test will not be able to tell you the specific site of infection, but will detect the infection if present. Pregnant women infected with Syphilis can also spread Syphilis to their unborn children in pregnancy. Men who have sex with men comprise the largest group of infected individuals, totaling just over 80% of all reported cases to the CDC in 2016. Individuals who should be tested for Syphilis include any individual who had sexual contact with a person known to be infected with Syphilis, any man who is actively having sex with another man, all pregnant women, sexually active individuals living with HIV, and anyone who is taking PrEP for HIV prevention.
