‘Come on, Harold, lots of nice treats waiting for you,’ she said, her voice shaking a little, wanting to make up for her nasty thoughts.
Hannah opened the door to the bedroom. It was chintzy. A bed against the wall covered in a flowery spread. Floral curtains, too. Nice thick carpet. Fake-oak furniture. There was a counter full of cakes, pies, a canister of squirty cream, a coffee pot, chocolate spread.
For a second, Hannah paused and furrowed her brow.
But then Harold was there, right behind her.
‘Oh, here you are,’ she said brightly. ‘Come in, Harold.’
He tottered in, rubbed his hands, went to sit on the bed.
Hannah shuddered. He knew what to do. He was expecting a service. She still couldn’t believe it. At any moment she expected Kamila or Mr Clifford to come in, laughing, saying, ‘It was all a joke, Hannah!’
They didn’t come.
So Hannah shut the door.
And smiling, she sashayed over to Harold, put her blue notebook and pink pen down on the bedside table, said: ‘So, Harold, shall I sit on your knee?’
