Finding Home
It was the opportunity of a lifetime, a challenge that would catapult Brent's career out of the water and into the world of theater outside his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia. A lead role! He had been cast into a lead role as a gay man and welcomed the chance to put his acting skills to the test. It didn't matter if he was remarkably straight—it would only boost his achievements to embody a gay character as a straight man. Wesley, his best friend, shared that same passion for acting and was delighted to be cast into the complementing lead role that would encourage them both to push boundaries. He was already gay. This would be easy.
Though Wesley was initially excited to share the stage, he found their first passionate scene to be exceptionally erotic. Everything had melted away as their lips locked, the warm lights from above heating him up...or had that been the kiss? As soon as the scene was over, a timid Brent fled the stage and left his script behind, along with a very confused Wesley. Brent convinced himself it was merely part of acting, part of experiencing the different emotions that his character experienced, and passed it off as some strange encounter. It was all part of the process. This was just another bump in the road.
That kiss, though...there was something significant about that kiss and Brent couldn’t stop thinking about it. His attempts to stifle the memory fell to the wayside and he had no choice but to return to the source—to Wesley. After all, they were in this play together. It wasn't like he could hide from his best friend.
Even though Wesley understood that Brent was straight, he couldn’t help peeking over at him during practice when they were changing...and Brent was looking, too. Feeling flushed and awkward, Brent turned away and convinced himself that it was just part of his role as an actor to feel something so deeply.
There was no reason to get caught up over emotions that weren't real. They were just acting...right?
