THREE VISITORS ARRIVE
â€˜Fanny!â€™ shouted Mr Kirrin, running up the stairs with a letter in his hand. â€˜FANNY! Where are you?â€™
â€˜Here, dear, here, helping Joan with the dusting,â€™ said Mrs Kirrin, appearing out of a bedroom. â€˜Donâ€™t shout like that. Iâ€™m not deaf, you know. Whatâ€™s the matter?â€™
â€˜Iâ€™ve a letter here from that old friend of mine, Professor Hayling,â€™ said Mr Kirrin. â€˜You remember him, donâ€™t you?â€™
â€˜Do you mean the man who came here to stay a few years ago, and kept forgetting to come in for meals?â€™ said Mrs Kirrin, flicking some dust off her husbandâ€™s coat.
â€˜Fanny, donâ€™t flick at me like that,â€™ said Mr Kirrin, crossly. â€˜Anyone would think I was covered in dust. Listen - heâ€™s coming to stay today for a week - instead of next week.â€™
Mrs Kirrin stared at her husband in horror. â€˜But he canâ€™t do that!â€™ she said. â€˜George is coming home today - and her three cousins with her, to stay. You know that!â€™
â€˜Oh - Iâ€™d forgotten,â€™ said Mr Kirrin. â€˜Well, ring up and tell George to stay where she is - we canâ€™t have them while Professor Hayling is here. I shall want to be quite undisturbed - he and I have to confer about some new invention of his. Donâ€™t look like that, my dear - this may be very very important.â€™
