“Few can match Thames' authority and veracity of presenting his story with the manner of pungency evident on nearly every page of the book. Watch this author rise.â€â€”Amazon Top 100 reviewer Grady Harp.
“Attorney S.D. Thames attempts a Herculean task: make real estate . . . actually interesting. Amazingly, Thames succeeds.â€â€”Above the Law.
“The story really hooks you – I literally read the book from start to finish in one day.â€â€”Amazon reviewer B.D. Wesley.
“This was one of those that I hated to see end. Nice to read a novel with interesting plot twists, and believable flawed humans... like a lot of us.â€â€”Amazon reviewer Ida Cow.
The debut legal thriller from Tampa-based author and lawyer S.D. Thames.
It’s just business—but it’s about to get personal for hard-nosed lawyer David Friedman when the housing crash of 2008 derails his shot at partnership with Southwest Florida’s most prestigious law firm. Given a year to prove he can make rain during the economic drought, David rolls up his sleeves and lands the client of his dreams—Frank O'Reilly, a real estate developer embroiled in dozens of lawsuits and hell-bent on turning a profit during the recession. Little does David know that Frank's company is involved in a murderous plot to cover up years of mortgage fraud in the Sunshine State.
As David prepares for a trial that will make or break his career, he discovers that a secret investor in Frank’s company is responsible for murder and will continue killing to hide the truth. The only thing David can’t figure out is whether Frank is the conspiracy’s victim or its mastermind. To answer that question, David must risk far more than partnership as he unravels one dark secret after another about his client, his law firm, and, ultimately, himself.
Interview With the Author
Q: Why do you write legal thrillers and crime fiction?
A: I studied literature in undergrad but really never felt the urge to write. For some reason, the writing bug really hit when I started practicing law. Now after practicing for eleven years, I have too much to write about and not enough time!
Q: What was the inspiration for Foreclosure?
A: Definitely the years I spent working as a litigation associate during Florida’s housing crash and the recession. This was a time when law firms were laying off associates by the hundreds across the country.
Q: So is the book biographical then?
A: The events in the novel are entirely fictitious. I’m sure there are aspects of David’s character that I can relate to (like we both would play the guitar more but for our day jobs). Unlike David, I made partner without having to land a client like Frank O’Reilly. Then again, I’m fortunate enough to work for the best law firm in the world!
Q: What separates Foreclosure from most legal thrillers?
A: I think you’ll find that it differs from most legal thrillers in terms of its character development. I personally enjoy character-driven mysteries more than fast-paced thrillers with cardboard characters, and I believe that really shows in this narrative. So far, the reviews seem to overwhelmingly agree with that.
Q: The novel is set in Fort Gaspar, Florida. What’s that about?
A: Fort Gaspar is a fictitious setting loosely based on Fort Myers, Florida, one of the cities hit hardest by the housing crash. Jose Gaspar was a Spanish buccaneer who invaded the western coast of Florida in the 18th Century. Tampa has an annual parade named after his nickname—Gasparilla—and I thought what a better name for the setting for a novel about greed in Southwest Florida than its most infamous plunderer.
Q: Who would you recommend Foreclosure to?
A: Any mature reader who enjoys legal thrillers or character-driven crime fiction (no legal background required!). I also think that fans of blues will like it. I was fortunate enough to receive permission from Stevie Ray Vaughan’s estate to quote lyrics from two of his songs in the novel. Thanks for checking it out!
