Sample passage: According to the testimony of the doctors, Mrs. Borden had been murdered from an hour and a half to two hours before her husband. According to Lizzie’s own statement, her father’s body was warm and fresh and blood was flowing from the wounds inflicted on it when she found it. On the contrary when Mrs. Borden’s body was discovered a few minutes later by Mrs. Churchill and Bridget Sullivan, her blood was coagulated and the body was stiffened in death. The contents of the stomachs of the two persons showed the length of time that elapsed between the killing of the woman and the man. It was pretty clear that both murders had been committed with a hatchet or cleaver, and it was evident that in the case of Mr. Borden the murderer had stood just behind the old man when the fatal blow was given.
