Frank Funzi Tieri succeeded Carlo Gambino as the most powerful Cosa Nostra head in New York City. Tieri was involved in loan sharking and gambling. He also had a presiding influence on the national crime commission which meted out hits, distributed territory among rival Mafia families and conducted general supervision. Funzi was also called The Old Man and Fanzuolo. An appealing mobster, even among some law enforcement officials, Funzi was likely the model for the character The Godfather character Don Corleone.
