Hank Crawford was gainfully employed as Ray Charles musical director (as well as his alto saxophonist) when he first launched a solo recording career, eventually combining the two duties for some three years before concentrating on his own career. He had joined Ray in 1958 and signed solo with Atlantic in 1960, releasing More Soul that same year. From The Heart was his third album for the label and features fellow Ray Charles band member David Fathead Newman on tenor saxophone, baritone saxophonist Leroy Cooper, John Hunt and Phil Guilbeau on trumpet, Edgar Willis on bass and Bruno Carr on drums. Sonny Forrest adds guitar on three tracks. The end result is an album that fuses Ray Charles R&B stylings, James Moodys blues and Duke Ellingtons swing; one of the early highlights of Hanks career.
