Funded! Successful Grantwriting for Your Nonprofit: Getting Started as a Grantwriter
You know how you've heard about a particular job but you're not sure what it is or if you're qualified? Have you heard about grantwriting for nonprofits but not really sure if it is a job you'd enjoy or be good at? Do you already work as a grant writer but want to learn more about it as a career? Do you have a strong desire to help a nonprofit raise funds from writing grants, whether you're for pay or volunteering?
This book has everything you need to know to about the career of grantwriting, no matter if you've done it for years or are just thinking about it. The core of the book is the copyrighted assessment tool that identifies your strengths and the areas where you need to strengthen to be an excellent writer of grants.
All of us have special skills and abilities that help us be good at some jobs and not at others. That doesn’t make us bad people, or stupid, or anything else but we are all different. In this vein, it is important to understand that being a grant writer is not a job for everyone! It takes a certain disposition and set of attributes in order to make this be a good fit for you. This is not meant to be a discouraging comment but simply to say if you don’t fit a particular job right now, it’s good to know the challenges you may face to become excellent at the tasks required.
Some people decide they want to become a grant writer because they have heard it can pay well. In fact, it can, and successful independent grant writers have been known to receive $10,000.00 for a completed federal grant proposal. But these grantwriters are not common.
Other people decide to write grants because they like to write. This is important, of course, but not sufficient. Another group of people get into proposal writing because they’ve been told to do it by their supervisor, or in order to get a job in the nonprofit sector.
I don’t want to say that any of these reasons are “badâ€â€”but, based on my own job experience and knowledge of the field, I would say that these reasons may not be enough to keep a person in the position for the long haul. One of the facts that people who are just getting started don’t know is that there if a large turnover in most grantwriting and development positions--the average tenure in a grantwriting position is just about 2 years. I think this is because so few people understand the job tasks before they get into a grant writing position.
The assessment included in this book is designed to help you determine for yourself if you have what it takes to become a skilled and successful grant writer. You’ll be asked questions to help YOU decide if this is for you. While many different types of people ARE grant writers, not all of them thrive in the position. Many happy and successful grant writers share similar traits and personalities. But even people who have the correct temperament and background may not have all the skills needed yet. So this assessment looks also at the skills you currently have and, based on your answers, will suggest areas where you may wish to augment your skills and knowledge.
While the Grantwriter Assessment Instrument is the heart of the book, you'll find a lot more information here: What is grantwriting?; What are the biggest myths about grantwriting?; What skills and training should you have?; How do you get your foot in the door as a grantwriter?; Grantwriting as an employee or freelancer? as well as references to follow up on AND exercises to deepen your understanding of the information.
This book is part of a larger series of books which, together, make up a complete course in writing grants. This volume is separated out so you can be sure whether you are right for writing grants and the grantwriting profession is one you can thrive in. I don't want you to waste hundreds or thousands of dollars on education and training if you will move on to a different job in 2 years or less. Get your copy of this--learn and determine for yourself!
