The Storm Glass was first invented in the mid 1700's, and soon made it's way into ships and harbors around Europe to help give warning of approaching bad weather.
It gained the most fame through Admiral FitzRoy who used a Storm Glass on the voyage in which he and Darwin traveled to the GalÃ¡pagos Islands.
As such, the instrument is sometimes called a 'FitzRoy Storm Glass'.
If the liquid in the glass bottle is clear, the weather will be bright.
If the liquid in the glass bottle is turbid, the weather will be cloudy and there may be signs of precipitation.
If the liquid in the glass bottle has a small spot, it is a symbol of wet or foggy weather.
If there is a cloud in the glass bottle, it will be a sign of thunder.
If the glass in sunny weather contains a small star, the symbol will snow.
