This project endeavours to serve two kinds of readers at the same time, those who like history and those who like A Game of Thrones; the two are often mutual interests. In effect, this e-book is a real life historical breakdown of the cultures, characters, and events contained within George R.R. Martin’s epic book series: A Song of Ice and Fire , which by the way, will be referenced by the common abbreviation used by fans , ASOIAF, from here on out. The books and short stories, along with the global smash hit HBO TV series A Game of Thrones, which is based upon the ASOIAF novels, is set in a complex, engrossing, medieval fantasy world every bit as interesting, complicated, morally gray, and brutal as humanity’s real history. The reason for Mr. Martin’s level of detail in crafting his characters, locations, cultures, and histories within the ASOIAF world is rather simple; George R.R. Martin is a lifelong student of history as well as an unashamed history “nerdâ€. In interview after interview, the author of this truly expansive world admits to drawing upon real events, real cultures, and actual peoples within world history as templates for his imagination to build upon. Mr. Martin seems to have a particular affinity for the Medieval Period (5th-15th centuries CE) of Europe and Middle -East, with a great deal of inspiration coming from British history during that era. In addition, he draws heavy influence from the Renaissance Era (15th-17th centuries CE). He is also not afraid to dive further back into human history for literary fuel, the ancient Celts, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Persians among others are all present in some form within the ASOIAF world. Nearly every culture on Earth, along with a bit of its history has a place in the sun within Martin’s revolutionary fantasy world.
Perhaps you had been reading a Dothraki passage in one of the books, or maybe you were watching Jason Mamoa’s brilliant performance as Khal Drogo and suddenly thought to yourself: “Wow, the Dothraki really remind me of Mongol warriors†; there are several reasons for that common observation, they are found here in the first chapter. If one gets the impression that the Ironborne have Viking overtones going on, you’re not mad; they do and we will cover it. Perhaps you are a fan of House Martell of Dorne and you get a distinct Moroccan and Moorish Spain vibe from the Dornish, your vibes are spot on; the parallels will be examined. Maybe you are a history buff who quickly recognized the direct parallels of the ‘Starks versus Lannisters’ adversary dynamic as pertaining to the Wars of the Roses of 15th century England. The primary cultures, locations, characters, and events within the novels and the HBO series will be stripped down to their real historical foundations. From the Bronze Age through the Renaissance Era, using the history of man on 6 continents as inspiration; George RR Martin forged a fantasy world which is clearly recognizable and relatable to the readers.
