Pno QRT 29 & Cello Son 19
A brilliant and virtuoso pianist, Georg Schumann (1866-1952) was by no means merely interested in solo piano recital. At the Leipzig Conservatory he performed chamber music with fellow students, and chamber music accompanied him throughout his life. In his Cello Sonata, he is very much a progressive harmonist, endowing the classical form with variations. In his Piano Quartet, Schumann concentrates on a few shapes and creates connections beyond movement boundaries, so that a high degree of unity results. He adds the viola to it all, thus enhancing the works full instrumental sound.
