CPO didn't want listeners to wait any longer! This new release is the second of Gernsheim's symphonies, premiering nos. 3 and 4. One might ask themselves while listening ""Is that Brahms?"" however they would be mistaken. Gernsheim's lyricism and especially the horn sound in his first movement, encourage the listener to appreciate his less well-known symphonies. Of all his symphonies, it is the one that calls for the largest ensemble, with an english horn, bass clarinet, tuba and cymbals in addition to the usual orchestra of the nineteenth century. This work creates the impression of a continuation of the second symphony while mixing relaxed and orchestrally thinned-out passages with energetic tutties.
