Set in Victorian England, Serena is about to be tried for a crime she feels that she did not commit. However, in an attempt to amuse himself, the judge allows her a last say before sentencing. Serena was born with a gift. She is able to communicate with the spirits of people who have passed on from this world and her only crime would appear to be not being able to supply the service that she had promised to her client, due to an unresponsive ghost.

In her cell, in the London prison, Serena is not permitted luxury. In fact, the sparse nature of the cell where she is placed is harsh punishment, though during her time in the prison, Serena realizes that she cannot get away from her fate in life. Even within the confines of the prison, there are ghosts down the hall who insist on invading her thoughts.
