What made me write this story?
The story premise came to me as I was just pondering my faith, asking myself how deep does it go, would it survive if truly challenged? The characters wrestle with some of life's toughest questions—How could God let this happen to me? Where is God when my heart is breaking? I believe in God, but my hurt is so big I’m not sure He’s enough. These are all thoughts that I've encountered in my life as well.
But even when life is unbearably hard, God is right there placing our tears in a bottle and inviting us into His arms to carry us through. I hope readers come away with a better sense of that truth when they read Grace in the Flames.
~***EXCERPT***
After another couple blocks she got to her car and turned the key in the lock.
“April?â€
She froze, heart tripping at the familiar voice, then turned in a slow circle. Ryan’s brows pulled together and he glanced over her shoulder into her car windows.
April pulled her upper lip between her teeth. “Hey, Ryan.†She smiled. “What are you doing?†Would he notice the tremble in her voice? Or the makeshift pillow in the backseat?
“Well to be honest, I followed you.†He’d followed her? “I was going to see if you wanted to grab something to eat, but you left so fast. I was trying to catch up with you when I saw you go into that liquor store, so I waited for you outside. I’d about given up and left when you came back out.â€
Her pulse throbbed in her throat.
“You had changed your clothes and taken off your makeup and…I didn't know what to think. So I followed you. What’s the deal?†He cocked his head and stepped closer.
Her mind raced as she searched for a plausible reason why someone would use a liquor store’s facilities to get ready for bed. “Well, I dunno. I wanted to get out of my work clothes I guess. Why on earth would you follow me like some stalker? That’s…that's creepy, Ryan.†Her voice cracked and she passed a panicky tongue over her suddenly parched lips.
He dipped his chin and looked right through her inner shield. “April…are you living in your car? What happened to your apartment?â€
And just like that, the jig was up. Shoulders drooping, she closed her eyes and exhaled. “I never had an apartment.†She examined her scuffed shoes. “I’ve been working so hard to save money—and I almost have enough, I really do. Please don’t say anything, Ryan. Please.†If they found out she’d used a fake address on her application…
