Grampa's Cribbage Secrets
Grampa's Cribbage Secrets is a fictional story about Alex's quest win favor with Linda at his high school. His plan involves becoming a better cribbage player, good enough to make a descent showing in the Cribbage tournament that Linda is organizing. As a novice, Alex goes to his Grampa, the best Cribbage player he knows, for some coaching on cribbage basics, and to learn this Cribbage master's secrets. The book gives a fairly through overview of the magic numbers on the cribbage board and how to lay-on and lay-off for wins. Mixed throughout the book are Grampa's quips that provide good rules of thumb on Cribbage techniques like basic pegging strategies. A key innovation in the book is Grampa's evaluation system that lets you decide which of several possible ways of discarding to the crib will in fact give you more points without having to use a computer to run the simulation. The book briefly highlights how Grampa built his evaluation system using discard tables, and an a spreadsheet simulation to create an easy in the head calculation that gives fairly precise outcome expectations on those difficult split decisions without having to memorize exhaustive discard tables.
The strategy of counting winners in the cribbage end-game to increase your win rate, and using cut counting to evaluating hands in general is covered compactly but sufficiently for most folks to adopt it rapidly in play. A discussion of counting winners, leads naturally to a more complex strategy that of scrambling. Scrambling is Grampa's secret method for generating barn-burning hand and cribbage combinations from meager dealings. Here Grampa, draws the line, although he gives some information he holds back the deeper secrets. After all, if Grampa revealed all his secrets, he wouldn't be a Cribbage master.
This book is primarily aimed at the Cribbage player that knows the rules but hasn't a lot of experience at the game. The techniques in this book can take you from novice to a fairly advanced player in a few weeks of practicing these techniques. They like won't make you a Cribbage champion, but hopefully they will lay a solid foundation upon which practice and experience can built a Cribbage champion. If you want to play better Cribbage this may be just the book for you.
