La Perla de Cadiz (1925-1975) was Antonia Gilibert Vargas, the daughter of the cantaora La Papera and the cantaor/ dancer Curro de la Gamba. In the realm of pure cante, her career was quite simple; she sang in festivals and tablaos in Cadiz, Madrid and then Seville, and began touring in France, Germany and England. Considered the queen of the cante por Bulerias, her singing was bursting with health as well as a full, warm and joyously clear tone, as evidenced on this release. She was awarded a number of important prizes, such as the ''Alegrias y Bulerias'' Prize in the Cordoba Competition and the ''Bulerias'' Prize in the International Competition in Jerez in 1962. She died at fifty after a long illness that deepened her voice and added more serious expression to her songs. After her death, numerous tributes were paid her by the greatest figures in the cante of our time.
