Japanese Woodblocks Wall Calendar 2020 (Art Calendar)
The purest of poetic forms, the traditional seventeen-syllable haiku always contains an evocative reference to a season and a distinct pause or interruption. Presented here are twelve haiku by masters of the genre. Each poem is rendered in Japanese calligraphy, Romaji transliteration, and English translation, and each is paired with a beautiful shin hanga woodcut. Japan's shin hanga (new print) movement, which flourished between 1915 and 1937, was a renaissance of traditional ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) printmaking. With their depth and delicacy, wide range of subtle hues, and time-honored focus on beauties, landscapes, birds, and flowers, shin hanga prints have long been treasured in both East and West. The prints reproduced in this calendar are in the extensive collections of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Pomegranate also publishes the books Shin Hanga: The New Print Movement of Japan, by Barry Till, and Haiku: Japanese Art and Poetry, by Judith Patt, Michiko Warkentyne, and Barry Till.
