Living the Dream: My Life and Basketball
The NBA is typically a dream for most young boys who pick up a basketball. Those that do defy the odds and play professionally usually start playing the game early as kids and continue to play on a slew of school and club teams throughout their childhood and youth. Most, if not, all of those kids grew up watching their sports idols winning championships and MVPs while making millions of dollars. They grew up emulating and idolizing those players in the hope of following a similar career path in the future. Those kids start at a young age—where imagination and dreams are larger than life.
Not many professional athletes begin to play their chosen sport at age 15 – basketball or otherwise. Not many have a name that translates to "always being on top." Not many handball players get asked to join the high school basketball team, not too many players defy odds to travel all the way from Nigeria to the United States and years later get enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
It has definitely been a dream ride for Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon, who went from knowing very little about the game of basketball as a youth to becoming an integral part of one of college basketball’s more memorable squads and one of the NBA’s all-time greatest players.
