Hawaii's Arthur Lyman was one of the early pioneers of stereo recording and helped invent a genre of music that has come to be called "Exotica". His records were extremely popular in the late 1950's through the mid-60's and are highly influential in today's down tempo lounge music scene. Lyman was a more accomplished player than his relaxed playing style would suggest. He was an extremely gifted musician and certainly the best that ever graced an exotica recording. He used a four-mallet approach on the vibraphone when most used two, which made it easier for him to accomplish more sophisticated chord voicings. Not only was he a progressive part of Hawaiian music and well versed in African, Latin and Japanese tunes, he was also quite an accomplished Jazz musician and kept up his momentum with hipper 60's styles such as Cool Jazz and Boogaloo. Most of his records feature at least one Jazz tune and unlike other exotica artists like Martin Denny and Les Baxter, the Lyman albums are all consistent and never contained unnecessary gimmicky filler - substance and integrity was paramount. His 1965 album, Hawaiian Sunset Vol. 2, the follow-up to his popular 1958 hit album, is no exception. Includes beautiful renditions of contemporary tunes like "Blue Hawaii" and "Red Sails in the Sunset" mixed with more traditional Hawaiian fare. All selections newly remastered.
